Imagine a hacker created a virus that overnight wiped out all the world's financial records.

The birth of a new conscious economy of the common good.

Recently a did the excellent Money and Society MOOC created by Prof. Jem Bendell, and Matthew Slater, two experts in this area.
The course investigates the problem of the global monetary system deeply and explores possible solutions. (To get an overall insight into the course, check this talk by Jem Bembell.)
Important learning to take into consideration: the major problems of the world are a consequence of the debt-based monetary system that demands endless growth of GDP, pushing the consumerism that leads to environmental exploitation. This system was also designed in a way that works constantly in favor of wealth concentration that increases inequality/poverty.
How to change this game?

THE HACKERS ATTACK!

A course assignment asked::

Imagine an elite anarchist hacker cell created a virus that overnight wiped out all electronic records of currency of all types, including deposits, loans, and many derivative contracts stored electronically. Imagine one year later, you are cycling around your home. What would things look like? What would people be doing? Write no more than 400 words describing the scene, with some comments at the end of your description on why you think this would be the situation. Be as creative, descriptive, and poetic in your prose as you wish.
Note 1: More than 96% of all the money in the world is just a digital record.
Note 2: You can replace the hacker attack with any other event that tears down the structures of the financial system like a big solar flare, a war that severs global connections, or disruption of energy grids by climate change, and the story will make sense as well.

My answer:

The Birth of the Conscious Economy of the Common Good

The year is 2023, Sasha is 12 years old, she is sitting silently, legs crossed, spine erect, close to her grandpa who tries to copy the girl. This is the third time she is trying to teach him how to meditate using a neurofeedback system that allows people to generate income through proof-of-meditation technology.

Sasha and her whole family live in the Big Oaks an old Chicago neighborhood that, thanks to the Transition Towns movement, became a self-sufficient ecological cell.

Since the global economy was knocked down by the financial blackout that imploded the financial institutions, people began to build small self-sustainable communities where they could collaborate to provide the basic needs by exchanging services and products and, consequently, leveraging local economies.

This new socio-economic structure thrived because two years before the hacker attack, Money of Good, a decentralized platform designed to foster a new equitable and sustainable economic model was launched bringing an unprecedented approach to money generation/distribution: people could make money by practicing meditation.

Considering the mental and financial distress of the population, the idea became very appealing and, once the platform offered easy and cost-free transactions, people soon adopted the new currency called GOOD to fill the gap left by the national currencies.

B-Corps, companies that were already aiming to use business as a force for good, also benefited from the adoption of the GOOD currency because its design was advantageous to fostering sustainable businesses.

This was possible because the platform could operate completely independently of the old traditional financial system since it was based on Holochain.

Governments gathered with big banks trying to orchestrate a reboot of the old system but, as the Money of Good offered people an easier, more efficient, and trustable way to make transactions and, most important of all, free from the control of the old rulers, these institutions did not get adherence to bring the old system back.

Sasha’s grandfather worked his whole life for CitiBank and for him, this new reality was hard to understand. However, having now not much to do, he was very happy to spend time with his granddaughter. And playing these meditation games was starting to pay off. The feeling of gradually accessing a field of inner peace and joy, as well as the earnings in GOODs, made him regain hope in the future, a much better future for Sasha and all the children in the world.
